Wonky cakes have certainly now arrived in Italy!!! My iconic wonky cakes are seen by many as one of the ultimate cake challenges, so with two fully booked wonky cake classes I knew my time in Rome last week was going to be fully occupied. With the help of Jane, my workshop co-ordinator, and the three lovely girls from ‘Cupcake 3 4 U’ , my hosts, wonky cakes made their first official appearance in the Italian cake world.
The students had travelled from the length and breadth of Italy to attend. Quite a few spoke some English, but not everyone and as I only know a few words of Italian, Christina – one of the Cupcake 3 4 U girls – provided translations.
The class started and slowly but surely two tier wonky cakes were carved and covered.
Here is a sample of some of the student’s cakes….didn’t they do well!
Certificates and that very important photo…..

Jane and I have a fab time so thank you to the girls from Cupcake 3 4 U for organising everything and the students for making everything worthwhile. We hope to return in 2012!

Can anyone tell me if they have used the bubble tea straws instead of wooden or plastic dowels for supporting tiered cakes? It seems to be something that the Americans use alot.
Hi Tracy,
We have not heard of these straws before so cannot comment.
Has anyone else tried these?
Marina
I found them:

Looks okay to use, plus they are really cheap. On the downside they look really thin, so they may break easily if they dont get inserted in the cake entirely straight up, but who knows….may be brilliant.
