Baking and Street Market Inspiration in Taupo, New Zealand

On a recent trip to my parents home in Taupo, New Zealand, my mother took me to the most wonderful market. The Taupo Riverside Market is a weekly market held every Saturday morning. With a focus on bread, arts and crafts, free-range eggs, baking, second hand goods, Murray’s second hand books, clothing, carvings, Hugh’s hand made furniture, honey, flowers, coffee beans, photographs, natural beauty products… and so much more! Cookie pops or biscuits on sticks – what fun!!!

I’ve made cookies on sticks on many occasions as children, particularly, seem to adore the novelty value of eating a cookie as if it was a lollipop!  In my very popular  ‘bake me I’m yours…cookie‘ book I included two examples, with my favourite being my ‘up, up and away’ ballooon cookies – so easy to make and yet so impressive!

Opalescent colour palette for mini cakes

“Colour is my day-long obsession, joy and torment” is a quote from Claude Monet, the founder of French impressionist painting, and yesterday I had to agree with him! I am sure many of you know that I love to use colour on my cakes, I like to try new combinations to see what I can create. So yesterday I set myself the challenge of using a colour palette that is… Continue reading

Folk Artist Julie Arkell inspires winning cake!

We are delighted to share with you the overall winning entry from our ‘Creative Writing Competition’. Lindy was very impressed with the presentation of Rhu Srand’s entry, the detail in the story, and how Rhu was inspired to create this beautiful, and different, cake.   We admired Rhu’s attention to detail eg: the stitching , the research that went into the design, the ‘tweeking’ of the cake recipe… Continue reading

I’ve just returned from  a lovely day spent looking around the 25th Squires Cake Decorating, Chocolate and Sugarcraft Exhibition, Farnham, Surrey. It was wonderful to meet up with so many cake friends and such a treat for me to be a visitor rather than trader/demonstrator!!!

Unsurprisingly, there was a definite royal theme to some of the cakes and exhibits on display at the show. This large picture… Continue reading

A Wonky Raffle Prize at the School Fair!

Lindy generously donated the cake she made at Friday’s Wonky Cake Workshop to the John Hampden Infant School in Wendover . This is our local school and is where Lindy’s own children went many years ago. It is also the school that all of Lindy’s staff children past and present attend.  What a treat!

Kiwi Rachel does Squires 2010 !

Wahey we’re off to Squires!  I do love an exhibition and this particular one I have been looking forward to for some time. Having done the mega NEC extravaganza that is Cake International back in November, and survived, I felt well armed and ready for exhibition number two in my world!  Towards the end of the day I was able to go ‘walkabout’ to visit other exhibitors and view the… Continue reading
