"The first novelty cake I ever made was a large pink pig for my daughter Charlotte’s second birthday, it didn’t exactly turn out as I’d hoped, at that stage I still had a lot to learn, but she was thrilled.  My children like many others are fascinated by the natural world so over the years I’ve had requests to make all kinds of animals from sharks and sailfishes to squirrels and butterflies. I really enjoy creating these cakes, as they almost seem to come alive and develop characters of their own whilst being made. Also, like us, animals are not 100% symmetrical so it doesn’t therefore matter if say one ear is larger than another or if an eye is slightly lopsided, in fact it can add to the appeal of the cake!"

The eye-catching animal cakes featured on the cover and back of PARTY ANIMAL CAKES may look difficult to make, but with Lindy Smith's step-by-step, color photo enhanced directions in hand, it's a piece of cake to produce them. A base cake round, fondant, and icing along with a cutting template are usually all that's needed, and sidebars of materials and equipment lists assure cooks have everything they need right at hand. These aren't quick productions  but cooks will find this takes them the next step from average to extraordinary cake-making. Parents will appreciate the kid-friendly animal themes. Diane C. Of all Lindy Smith's books (which I own) this is the one I prefer because it doesn't need special equipments (like PC cutters) like her other books. Designs are simply astonishing and easy enough to make if you have some time in your hands. For most designs there is a cookie or a mini cake section and you will also learn tons of modelling techniques. Very highly recommended
