Using sugarcraft cutters to create shapes out of sugarpaste icing is an easy and effective way of decorating your cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Be creative: repeat shapes or inlay one shape inside another. Allow yourself time to experiment, try thinking outside the box, you may be using a petal cutter but does it have to represent a petal? What patterns can you create by using just one shape? What happens when you combine an a-symmetric shape with it’s mirror image? Look not only at the patterns of shapes you create but also at the spaces in between those shapes.

Inspiration on how to use shapes is all around you, all you need to do is look. For example: Look at designs on birthday cards, wrapping paper, curtain fabric, clothing, surface designs on buildings, wrought iron railing, stain glass windows etc. Be inspired and don’t just copy!
